Case Study
This case study explores the emotional struggles of Yoda, a 10-year-old Ragdoll cat, after losing his lifelong companion, Sam the Shih Tzu. In an attempt to cheer him up, the owner introduces Neo, a 4-month-old Ragdoll kitten, into the household. However, the new addition turns out to be a challenge, as Yoda and Neo fail to bond, leading to a stressful situation for both cats and Theresa. To alleviate the tension and restore harmony, Theresa contacted me and by using virtual sessions conducted over Zoom we got Yoda and Neo to connect, facilitating trust, relaxation, and eventually, a peaceful coexistence.
Introduction: Yoda, a mature 10-year-old Ragdoll cat, had a deep emotional bond with Sam, a Shih Tzu dog, who had been his lifelong best friend. Tragically, Sam passed away, leaving Yoda in a state of depression. Concerned about Yoda's well-being, Theresa, his owner decided to adopt Neo, a lively and feisty 4-month-old Ragdoll kitten, hoping that the new addition would bring joy back into Yoda's life. Unfortunately, the introduction of Neo into the household created more problems, as Yoda displayed reluctance to accept the kitten and appeared to be on the verge of injuring Neo.
Methods:
Theresa contacted me to see if The Trust Technique could help. The sessions were conducted virtually over Zoom, allowing me to observe and interact with Yoda and Neo in their natural environment.
Results:
During the initial sessions, I instructed Theresa when she went into a quiet space (The present moment) to be mindful of the signals and behavior displayed by Yoda and Neo. The Trust Technique focuses on helping animals and humans reconnect and establish trust through present-moment awareness and mutual understanding. As Theresa began to apply the technique, she noticed a remarkable change in both Yoda and Neo's behavior and she also noticed a difference in how she herself felt with regard to the situation. The core point is that animals and humans share feelings. Theresa was sharing feelings of guilt, disappointment and anxiety for both her dear pets and they were picking up on it.
Yoda and Neo's response to The Trust Technique was nothing short of astonishing. Neo, despite being initially feisty and frightened, approached Theresa during the sessions and relaxed beside her. Surprisingly, Yoda followed suit, eventually lying down on the other side of her. Within minutes, both cats had become noticeably calmer and at ease.
Over time, Theresa diligently practiced The Trust Technique on a regular basis. During these practice sessions, one of the cats, often Neo, would voluntarily join her . Remarkably, the other cat, Yoda, began to follow suit, indicating a gradual development of trust and bonding between the two felines.
Discussion:
The Trust Technique proved to be a powerful tool in helping Yoda and Neo build a bond and establish harmony in the household. By being present in the moment and responding to the cats' cues, Theresa fostered an environment of trust and safety, allowing both felines to relax and reconnect.
The case study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing emotional needs in animals. The loss of Sam had a profound impact on Yoda, and introducing Neo without careful consideration of his emotional state created additional stress for all parties involved. However, through the application of The Trust Technique, Theresa was able to bridge the gap and facilitate a positive relationship between Yoda and Neo.
Conclusion:
This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of The Trust Technique in resolving conflicts and emotional struggles among pets. By practicing present-moment awareness and actively responding to their cues, (what we term as ‘mindful regard’) Yoda and Neo were able to overcome their initial difficulties and now coexist harmoniously. The Trust Technique offers a valuable approach to supporting animals' emotional well-being and strengthening the bond between pets and their owners.
